Be Informed

You know what they say? Knowing is half the battle, and in this case, the more you know the better prepared you will be. First, make sure you understand the hazards you might face in Bonney Lake and the surrounding areas and the level of risk they might bring. Then, make sure you are signed up to receive emergency alerts from both Bonney Lake Alert and Pierce County Alert. These systems are used to share urgent messaging either before an incident (warnings) or during an incident (action steps for safety). You can also go to https://www.epiceoc.com/pages/alerts to sign up for additional systems in the area. Check the links below for more information and sign-up options. Taking these steps now will ensure you are more aware of your surroundings than you were before, and set you up to receive timely, potentially life-saving information when most needed.

Download The Mobile Alert App

In addition to signing up to receive messages about Bonney Lake, we also recommend downloading and logging into the CodeRED app for Android or iPhone devices. As long as you give the CodeRED app your location permissions, it will alert you to situations if you and your phone are in any city that also uses CodeRED. Most Pierce County cities, including Tacoma, Buckley, Puyallup, Sumner, Orting, and Lakewood will be using CodeRED as well, giving you access to their emergency info when you’re visiting or driving through those communities. Understanding Local Hazards
Pierce County is a beautiful area defined by Mount Rainier, the Puget Sound, flowing rivers, and magnificent bridges. Our geological history created this region from the Earth shifting over millions of years. Natural and human-caused disasters have occurred in Pierce County's history. We know they will happen again in the future. Pierce County has identified hazards that are the greatest risk to residents and infrastructure. The County is working to understand the history, frequency, and impacts of these hazards. This will allow local officials to help communities prepare for and recover from the damage these disasters cause. We are asking residents to know their hazards, their risks, and evaluate their readiness. To learn more about the identified hazards, check out https://www.piercecountywa.gov/6481/Know-Your-Hazards

The City also has a Hazard Mitigation Plan, originally adopted in 2004. The latest version of the plan was developed in cooperation with the Pierce County Department of Emergency Management and participating local jurisdictions.

NATIONAL RISK INDEX FOR NATURAL HAZARDS-

  • FEMA’s National Risk Index https://hazards.fema.gov/nri/
  • The National Risk Index is a new, online mapping application from FEMA that identifies communities most at risk to 18 natural hazards. This application visualizes natural hazard risk metrics and includes data about expected annual losses from natural hazards, social vulnerability, and community resilience. The Risk Index is accessible to anyone interested!

RISK COMMUNICATION AND WHY IT MATTERS-

  • Communicating potential risks can be challenging. It can be hard for communities to visualize how a disaster that has not happened yet, will affect a neighborhood or business. Even if communities are aware of disaster risks, it does not always mean they will take the necessary preparatory actions. The National Risk Index helps illustrate how communities may be affected by natural hazards, and how specific factors affect these risks.
  • Visit the National Risk Index to understand your risk to natural hazards.

ASSESS YOUR NEEDS & REDUCE YOUR RISK

  • The National Risk Index will help to better inform, engage, and assist the public in understanding natural hazard risks. With better understanding, communities can identify and engage resources, plan accordingly, and take action to reduce risks.
