Water Service Information

The City of Bonney Lake's provides approximately 1.3 billion gallons of drinking water each year to its residents and businesses. The water service area spans 25.89 square miles on the plateau, extending from Rhodes Lake Road in the south to the Pierce County Boundary in the north. This system services around 42,000 people through more than 14,000 residential and commercial connections.

Water Sources

Water comes from the following facilities located throughout the service area:

  • Grainger Springs
  • Victor Falls Springs
  • Tacoma Point Well Field
  • Ball Park Well and Treatment Sites

The City is committed to delivering safe, high-quality water that meets or exceeds Washington State Department of Health standards. Efforts are ongoing to improve water quality and protect natural water sources.

Meter Reading

City of Bonney Lake – Water Meter Information

The City of Bonney Lake Water Division reads approximately 15,000 water meters each month. We have two staff members dedicated to reading those meters.

Please help by keeping your water meters accessible and free of any obstructions. This allows staff to quickly read your meter or shut off water during an emergency.

Common obstructions include:
  • Grass, bushes, or other landscaping
  • Vehicles, trailers, or construction equipment
  • Garbage or recycling bins
  • Gravel or other materials
Keeping the area clear helps prevent damage to you landscaping and ensures accurate water and sewer bills.

Where is your water meter?
It is usually located at the edge of your property or in a nearby utility easement. It is housed in a rectangular box made of concrete, plastic, or metal with a matching lid.

Water meter Upgrades
We are upgrading 10% of water meters each year to a radio-read system. These meters will:
  • Provide highly accurate readings
  • Record up to 96 days of data in 15-minute intervals
  • Help detect leaks and water use patterns
  • Will support a future online system where customers will have the ability to view their water use and account information

Water Quality Report

The City of Bonney Lake has the ability to provide up to 9 million gallons of drinking water each day. This water comes from:

Groundwater springs at Victor Falls and Grainger Springs
Wells at Tacoma Point and Ball Park

We also have an agreement with Tacoma Public Utilities (TPU) to receive up to 4 million more gallons of water per day, if needed.

Our water system includes more than 20 million gallons stored in reservoirs.

To keep your drinking water safe and high quality, our Water Division:

Take 480 routine bacteria samples every year
Collects many other samples required by regulations from Washington State Department of Health and the Environmental Protection Agency 
Sends all samples to a certified, independent lab for testing on a monthly, quarterly, and annual basis.

Lead Line Inventory

Lead and Copper Rule Revision

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Washington Department of Health (DOH) require that all community and non-transient non-community (NTNC) water systems develop an initial inventory of service lines that meets the Lead and Copper Rule Revision (LCRR) requirements for both the public and private portions of every service line. This inventory must be submitted to the state by October 16, 2024.

The City of Bonney Lake has chosen the statistical guidance method permitted by the EPA, which requires the City to demonstrate a 95% level of statistical confidence regarding the absence of lead components in our service lines. The City inspected and/or reviewed work orders for 370 randomly selected locations, and through these inspections, we did not find any that contained lead service components.

The City will continue to inspect our system as repairs are made and as requirements dictate to ensure we provide clean, safe, and reliable drinking water.

Fire Hydrant Meter Rental

Fire Hydrant Meter Usage

The City of Bonney Lake issues fire hydrant meters for use on construction sites, for street sweeping purposes, or other miscellaneous short term uses. To obtain a fire hydrant meter, contact the Public Works Administrative personnel at 253-447-4319. There is a $500 deposit due at time of rental. You will be billed monthly for your consumption and water availability charge. Your final consumption will be deducted from the deposit upon return of the meter. The City does not provide a backflow prevention device with the fire hydrant meter. The renter of the meter is responsible for the backflow prevention device. The City requires any backflow prevention device used with the fire hydrant meter be tested by a certified Backflow Assembly Tester (BAT) in the field before the meter can be used. City personnel will witness this test. If the renter is using a water truck, a mechanical backflow prevention device is not required if the truck has an approved Air Gap. City personnel will inspect the truck to assure the Air Gap is compliant. Fire hydrant meters can be picked up at the Public Works Administrative Office located at 21719 96th St, Buckley, WA 98321. We also have a water fill station available for use, located at 9496 198th Ave E.  Please contact Public Works Administrative personnel to acquire usage instructions and an access and pin code. You will be billed monthly for your consumption.

Water Conservation Tips
Both Water and Sewer charges are based on how much water you use. To save money on both, the following water conservation suggestions are offered for residential customers. It is important to minimize both daily water consumption quantity and to minimize water use during peak water use hour periods.

The City of Bonney Lake works to reduce water loss and promote responsible water use.

Water Loss
Water loss is the difference between the total water produced and the amount used by customers. This is shown as a percentage of the water produced.
Since 1999, our goal has been to keep water loss at or below 10%, as required by state Water Use Efficiency standards.
To reduce water loss, we:
Perform yearly leak detection and repair
Test, calibrate, or replace water meters
Issue permits for water use from fire hydrants
