The following is an excerpt of the project details from WSDOT:

Why is WSDOT widening SR 410?
Current traffic volumes on SR 410 surpass the capacity of a two-lane roadway, reducing mobility and safety. The area around Bonney Lake and east Pierce County has developed tremendously in the last 10 years and SR 410 is feeling the effect of this development.

The End Result
This 1.49-mile project adds one lane in each direction of SR 410, milepost 15.61 to 17.10, with a raised median separating the eastbound and westbound traffic between 214th and 234th avenues. WSDOT worked with the City of Bonney Lake to plan three future median access breaks within the project limits. The approximate locations are at the 1/4, 1/2, and 3/4 points in the project area, although the exact locations depends on the design of the City’s arterial street system. A new traffic signal and revised traffic movements at the split intersection of 233rd Avenue East and 234th Avenue East will improve safety and mobility. This projects also adds stormwater treatment facilities, lighting at the traffic signals and bus stop improvements.

Project Benefits
Safety: The intersection of 233rd and 234th Avenue is currently identified as a high accident location. This project improves safety by installing a traffic signal along with rearranging the traffic movements. The traffic volumes for this area are so high there are very few gaps in the traffic flow to make left turns, which causes many people to make risky maneuvers -- leading to collisions.

Congestion: By adding one lane in each direction and restricting left turns to intersections with designated turn lanes, the movement for mainline SR 410 will improve significantly.

What is the project timeline?
Preliminary engineering, utility relocations, environmental documentation and right of way acquisitions are currently under way. This project will be advertised for construction bid in November 2009. Construction is scheduled to be complete by summer of 2011.

Project Updates
: From Mayor's Weekly Newsletters (Sign up to receive newsletters)

June 26, 2010: [Public Works] Installed about 250 linear feet of 12 inch water line. Begin pouring concrete for retaining walls. Continued to raise northern lane. City Engineer contacted WSDOT to discuss installation of additional striping and RPMs on the widened shoulder next to eastbound SR 410 at OSB Hwy intersection. PW Engineering completed the plan revisions and submission relating to the SR 410 Widening project at 214th Avenue East.

June 19, 2010:
Set up water shut down for Tuesday for the continued installation of the 12 inch water main along SR 410. Potholed gas, power, water, and phone at the 214th intersection to accommodate a widening effort for the future intersection improvement. This change to the WSDOT contract will prevent replacing the storm drain lines a couple of years after installation.

May 14, 2010:  Completed water line replacement (171 lf) of 12 inch water main at wall 2 site (between Pond A and Sunset Chevrolet lot).

April 23, 2010: City Engineer attended weekly project management meeting. Construction of storm water ponds is continuing. Water line extension is about to commence. North side roadway construction is about to start.

April 16, 2010: City Engineer attended weekly project management meeting. Construction of storm water ponds is continuing. Water line extension is about to commence. North side roadway construction is about to start.

March 5, 2010: City Engineer attended the WSDOT preconstruction meeting in Olympia for the SR 410 Widening project in Eastown. The contractor’s schedule of work will be submitted next week. They did mention that they are intending on constructing the southern east bound lane first then moving to the north side of SR 410 to add the additional west bound lane. The contractor is scheduled to be on site during the last week of March.

February 5, 2010: WSDOT opened bids. Bids were approximately 50% of the Engineer’s Estimate.
