July 9, 2010:  The mitigation plan for the Safe Routes trail is complete; the JARPA permit application has been sent to the U.S. Army Corps. Director Leaf updated cost estimates for the Safe Routes project; the latest estimate is that the education program will come in about $50,000 under budget, and a request has been submitted to WSDOT to transfer these funds to other components that are over budget (i.e., environmental permits and mitigation).

Safe Routes to School Poster Contest WinnersJune 16, 2010: Poster prize contest winners have been selected and prizes will be distributed at area schools soon. You can view the winning posters from each school in the City's online photo album. Congratulations to the winners, and thank you to everyone who submitted a poster!

[Community Services Dept Updates] Community Services hosted an open house for the Safe Routes to School project/program. David Wells assisted Di-rector Leaf with preparations. Some Safe Routes data collected so far: 1,850 students heard Willie Weir speak during assemblies; 236 students participated in walk/bike-to-school events; 40 participated in a bike rodeo at Victor Falls School; 151 students turned in posters for an art contest with a theme of street-crossing behavior; 25 middle school students judged the art contest posters; 95 elementary and students and 92 high school students participated in field trips to Fennel Creek; staffers from an elementary school, Director Leaf, and Feet First participated in a parking lot safety analysis at one school. Walk route maps at Bonney Lake area schools are in process. Additional Safe Routes events expected in the next school year: one or more bike rodeos; three walk/bike-to-school events; two or more walk/bike safety audits; complete walk route maps. Director Leaf met with Craig Spencer, Troy Whitten, and Jen Cole (Feet First) to discuss and recommend changes to the draft walk route maps (part of Safe Routes project).

June 4, 2010: Community Services reports: Almost 100 Bonney Lake High School students participated in a field trip to Fennel Creek as part of the Safe Routes to School project (part of this project is constructing a mile of trail along Fennel Creek). Special thanks go to Grant Sulham who coordinated all aspects of the field trip. Willie Weir spoke at assemblies at Bonney Lake Elementary School and Mountain View Middle School regarding bicycling. So far 151 elementary school students have participated in our Safe Routes to School poster contest. Prizes will be announced later in June.
Public Works report: PW-OPS staff helped the Parks Dept. with signage and provided temporary traffic control for the Safe [Routes] to School/Fennel Creek Trail Event.

March 19, 2010: [Community Services Department] Participated in car counts at one of the Bonney Lake elementary schools as part of the Safe Routes to School education program. Also met with officials at four local schools who will be participating in the education program. Coordinated Willy Weir assemblies at four schools. Started work on poster contests at the schools. All of these items (and more) are required as part of the Safe Routes grant program. Worked with Public Works to provide documentation to WSDOT so we can go out to bid for sidewalk/curb/gutter construction on April 15th. Public Works will oversee construction while Community Services will oversee the education program, environmental review for the trail, and land acquisition for the trail.

March 5, 2010: Preparing to advertise this contract. Coordinating with WSDOT to ensure management of Federal funds is done correctly by the City.
